Anthony Huberman on the work of Gedi Sibony
Anthony Huberman, Chief Curator at the Contemporary Art Musuem St. Louis, speaks about the exhibition he curated Gedi Sibony: My Arms Are Tied Behind My Other Arms. This exhibition marked Sibonys first-ever solo museum show and was presented from January 23 through April 19, 2009, at the Contemporary Art Musuem St. Louis. Sibony uses materials such as cardboard, hollow doors, and metial pipes, and playfully evokes the effortless magic of the mundane. Sibonys sculptures achieve a nonchalant awkwardness, a proud nudity, and an overall implausibility that bring together space, weight, and materiality in ways that seem happily accidental. In the context of a near-collapse of contemporary sociopolitcal reality, these works quietly promote an economy of means, re-use, transparency, and the power and beauty of essentials.
